This issue of Inmaterial. Design, Art and Society brings together articles on artistic and design research, as well as experimental or creative projects that take into account, are permeated by, investigate or arise from cosmologies and ontologies that go beyond those traditionally associated with Western and Westernised academic thought, as well as its cultural frameworks for interpreting the world, which are hegemonic in the arts and design. However, we are accompanied by several questions related to the meaning of thinking within epistemological frameworks that are not necessarily those we know and that arise in realities different from our own. We question, for example, the meaning of transferring notions, ideas and concepts that have emerged in very specific contexts in the global south to European university environments, as is the case with this call for papers. The blurred boundaries between appropriation and the need to question the bibliographic hegemony that dominates our academic research, that is, the references and authors that usually accompany us, are also a difficulty that this issue risks.
